TREKKING

Trekking on Rapa Nui is an excellent way to discover the island on foot, connecting with its nature, history, and landscapes. Various trails allow you to explore volcanoes, the coastline, lava fields, and ancient paths used by the Rapa Nui people.

During these hikes, you'll discover places steeped in history, enjoy unique ocean views, and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the Rapa Nui people and their land. Many of these routes also traverse areas less frequented by tourists, offering a more tranquil and immersive experience of the island's natural beauty.

TEREVAKA

Te ara e oho era ki Terevaka

The trekking to Maunga Terevaka is one of the most special hikes you can do on Rapa Nui. Terevaka is the highest point on the island, offering a 360° panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and the volcanic landscape that makes up the island.

The route takes you through diverse landscapes of the island. The hike begins by crossing a small forest, then leads to Rano Aroi, a crater with a lagoon surrounded by vegetation, which is part of one of the few forested areas on Rapa Nui. From there, the trail continues ascending through open landscapes until reaching the summit of Terevaka, the highest point on the island.

This trekking lasts approximately four hours and allows you to explore different ecosystems in the island's interior while enjoying a peaceful walk filled with unique landscapes. Upon reaching the summit, visitors can rest and contemplate the vastness of the ocean surrounding Rapa Nui.

COAST

Te ara e oho era ki Hanga o teo

NORTH COAST

The trek to Hanga Oteo is an ideal hike for those who want to explore less-traveled areas of Rapa Nui and discover the history found along the island’s coastline.

During the journey, you will walk along natural trails beside the ocean, visiting different ahu, ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks, and remains of old settlements that reveal how the Rapa Nui communities lived in the past. Along the way, it is also possible to observe volcanic formations, coastal landscapes, and various archaeological elements that are part of the island’s heritage.

This trek lasts approximately 5 to 6 hours, allowing enough time to explore the area at a relaxed pace, stop at different sites, and gain a deeper understanding of the history and connection between the Rapa Nui people and their land. It is an experience that combines nature, archaeology, and hiking, ideal for those who want to discover another side of the island.

POIKE

Te ara e oho era ki Poike

The trek to Poike allows you to explore one of the oldest and least visited areas of Rapa Nui. Poike is located on the eastern side of the island and is characterized by its open landscapes, volcanic formations, and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The hike follows natural trails, visiting important sites such as Vai a Heva, an ancient water source used by the Rapa Nui communities; Maunga Tea-tea; and Maunga Parehe, one of the most iconic hills in the area, offering sweeping views of the landscape and featuring a trachyte moai. Along the way, it's also common to encounter cows and various birds, which are part of the natural environment of this part of the island.

This trek lasts approximately 5 to 6 hours, allowing you to walk at a leisurely pace while learning about different aspects of the geography, history, and ancient life in this area of Rapa Nui. It's an ideal experience for those who wish to discover a more remote, peaceful, and natural part of the island.

CAVES

THE KINGDOM OF THE

He ana kionga o Rapa Nui

The caves on Rapa Nui are natural formations created mainly by ancient volcanic lava flows that, as they cooled, formed tunnels and cavities under the earth.

This trek takes place in the Roiho area and lasts approximately 4 to 5 hours, allowing you to explore and learn about some of these volcanic formations while exploring the island's natural landscape.

Throughout history, these caves served various purposes for the Rapa Nui people: they were used as shelters, resting places, food storage areas, and even ceremonial spaces. In times of conflict, they were also used as hiding places or temporary dwellings, forming an important part of ancient life on the island.

During the walk, you can better understand how these natural formations were used by the Rapa Nui communities and how they are part of the island's cultural and natural heritage.

MOAI

THE PATH OF MOAI

He ara o te moai

The Ara O Te Moai trek follows one of the ancient paths used to transport the moai from the quarry to different parts of the island. This route allows you to understand part of the process and history related to the movement of these large stone sculptures.

During the hike, you can see several fallen moai along the path, left behind during transport. These remains allow you to imagine what the journey was like in ancient times and learn more about the techniques and organization of the Rapa Nui people.

It is a hike of approximately 2 to 3 hours, ideal for those who wish to explore a trail with great historical and archaeological value, while enjoying the natural landscape of the island and discovering an important part of the history of the Moai.

ARA O TE AO

The Ara O Te Ao trek is a hike that allows you to discover one of the most beautiful natural trails on the island. The route begins in the CONAF sector, from where the trail starts, crossing areas of forest and native vegetation.

The hike takes you through diverse natural landscapes, along peaceful trails surrounded by trees and nature. The route continues until you reach the impressive Rano Kau volcano crater, one of Rapa Nui's most breathtaking sights, with its large inland lagoon and panoramic views of the ocean.

This trek lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours, and is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy a peaceful walk, surrounded by nature, until reaching one of the most important volcanoes on the island.
